Burglar Jailed After Stealing from Sleeping Pensioner 1

A Bridlington man who stole cash from an elderly woman’s home as she slept has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

David Griffiths, 36, of Landsdowne Road, admitted to sneaking into the property on Jubilee Avenue on Tuesday, March 31 and taking £400 cash, which he used to buy drugs.

The following day Griffiths handed himself in after contacting Police Community Support Officer Bev Feirn and telling her that he had “done something stupid” and that he needed “locking up”.

He also admitted stealing meat and groceries valued at £111 from a supermarket in March 26 and a further £60 of meat from a second supermarket on Friday, April 1.

Neighbourhood Inspector Rob Cocker said: “David Griffiths is a prolific thief and well known in Bridlington for all the wrong reasons.

“This was a particularly despicable act, sneaking into the home of an elderly woman and stealing her savings.

“Knowing that someone has been into your home – particularly while you were there – can have a huge impact on your sense of security and no one should be made to feel that they’re not safe in their own home.

“I hope that knowing that Griffiths is off the streets will offer this lady and her family some comfort.”
